Short answer
A nano tank needs small portions, a small pump and small tools. Aquarium Co-Op added a precision port for smaller foods to feeders shipped from 3/26/26; Tetra lists its smallest Whisper at 0.5 L/min; and Aqueon's mini siphon vacuum is listed for 1-5 gallon tanks. Merck says overfeeding causes health problems as well as a dirty tank, so test any feeder's portion while you are home.
Key facts
- Feeder mounting
- Hood hole (F14: 30 mm / 1-1/4 in) or a rim clamp; check the maker's rim range[1][2]Aquarium Co-Op's clamp takes rims up to 0.9 in (24 mm) and comes with an adhesive pad for flat surfaces.
- Food form to check
- Small foods: Aquarium Co-Op's feeder gained a second, precision port for smaller foods from 3/26/26[2][3]Earlier units lack it. Merck says feeding rates vary with species, age, system and water temperature.
- Aeration option
- Smallest single-outlet pumps; Tetra lists the Whisper 10 at 0.5 L/min[4][5]Maker figures with no stated test depth. Fluval's A101 is its smallest A Series pump (one outlet, 2 W at 120 V / 60 Hz); its "under 24 dB" states no method.
- Check valve and pump position
- Pump above the water line; if it must sit lower, fit a check valve near the rim[6][7]Aquarium Co-Op says a pump below the water level needs a check valve and suggests placing the valve near the top of the tank so water stops at the rim.
- Water-change tool
- Aqueon mini siphon vacuum: 5 in tube, 6 ft hose, listed for 1-5 gallon tanks[8]Aqueon says to prime it by moving the intake tube up and down. Above 5 gallons, look at Aqueon's larger sizes.
- Light timer
- Smart plug or mechanical timer for the light, within its stated load rating[9][10]TP-Link rates the Kasa EP25P4 at 15 A and 1/6 HP; Intermatic rates the TN311 at 15 A resistive and 1/3 HP. Keep plugs away from splashes.
- Key electrical step
- Drip loop in every cord before it reaches the outlet[11][12]Aquarium Co-Op and JUWEL both tell owners to let the cord dip below the outlet so water drips off instead of running into the plug.
- Before time away
- Run any feeder while you are home first; Fish Mate advises 14 days of supervision for a new F14[1]The maker's recommendation, not evidence of reliability.
Watch out for
- Suggested tank sizes are not measured flow. Tetra offers Whisper pumps for aquariums from 10 to 100 gallons; those are the maker's suggestions, so the smallest model is the place to start, not a promise of fit.
- Do not compare dB figures across makers. Fluval quotes "under 24 dB" for the A101 and gives no method; other publishers measure at different distances and surfaces.
- A portion that suits one tank is not a rule for another. Merck says nutritional needs are known for only a handful of species and that feeding rates vary with species, age, system and temperature.
- Check which feeder revision you get. Aquarium Co-Op's precision port for smaller foods applies to units shipped from 3/26/26; earlier units differ.

Questions
Does a nano or betta tank need an air pump?
Not always. Aquarium Co-Op says air bubbles help by moving water and agitating the surface, and that good surface agitation is key to gas exchange. Tetra says a filter that breaks the surface as it returns water also adds oxygen. Tetra says an air pump is not required with its Whisper Power Filter for that reason. A 2020 study of 54-liter tanks found oxygen uptake depended strongly on water flow and open surface.[11][13][14]
What size gravel vacuum fits a 5-gallon tank?
Aqueon lists its mini siphon vacuum, with a 5 in tube and a 6 ft hose, for 1-5 gallon aquariums. Its sizes run up to a large 16 in tube for bigger tanks.[8]
