Buying aquarium gear online: a checklist
Seller, variant, voltage, certification mark, warranty and returns: what to check before you order an aquarium pump, timer or feeder from Amazon or AliExpress.

Short answer
Before you order a pump, timer or feeder from a marketplace, check five things: who actually sells and ships it, that it is the right variant (120 V / 60 Hz for mains gear), that the unit will carry a safety certification mark, whether the maker's warranty covers that seller, and how returns work. On Amazon, the "Ships from" and "Sold by" lines answer the first question; on AliExpress, we found no maker-confirmed official store for the aquarium brands we checked.
1. Who sells it
On Amazon, open the offer and read "Ships from" and "Sold by". Amazon.com or the brand itself is the simplest case. A brand storefront on Amazon shows the brand's catalog; it does not prove who fulfils a specific offer.[1]
What makers say about where to buy:
| Brand | What its own site says |
|---|---|
| Tetra | Its US where-to-buy page links to the Tetra brand store on Amazon, plus Chewy and Walmart[1] |
| NICREW | Amazon is its only official online sales channel[2] |
| hygger | Lists its authorized Amazon stores by name: AquaFcous, usmagob, Jnkany, Hygmarine, Hysupplies, JPMAGOB and Magod-JP[3] |
| Aqueon | Offers only a US zip-code store locator; no Amazon or AliExpress link[4] |
| Seachem | Lists specialist and pet retailers, not Amazon or AliExpress[5] |
| Fluval | Points to a retailer locator; no Amazon or AliExpress link found[6] |
A brand that doesn't list Amazon is not telling you Amazon units are fake; it just doesn't name Amazon.[5] Seller lists change, so re-check the maker's page before you rely on one.
AliExpress. We checked the maker pages of EHEIM, Tetra, Aquarium Co-Op, NICREW, hygger and Fluval and found no link to an official AliExpress store for any of them. hygger lists Amazon, eBay and MercadoLibre stores and no AliExpress store.[3] Treat an AliExpress store named "Official Store" for these brands as the store's own claim.
2. The right variant
The same product name can cover several variants: different voltages, plug types, sizes or pack counts. For mains equipment, find the maker's 120 V / 60 Hz item number and match it to the listing. The 120 V vs 230 V guide shows examples of pumps sold only in 230 V / 50 Hz versions.
3. A safety mark on the unit
For plug-in equipment, look for a UL, ETL or CSA mark, and in Canada a Canadian version such as CSA, cUL or cETL. Health Canada says the mark must appear on the product, not only the packaging, and that products bought from outside Canada may lack marks or not meet Canadian requirements.[7] A logo in the listing is a starting point; verify the exact model.
A brand-level list of marks is not a model-level listing. hygger's company page names several marks without saying which model holds which.[3]
4. Warranty and seller
Some warranties depend on where you bought. NICREW's 12-month limited warranty requires proof of purchase from an official or authorized channel.[2] If a maker names authorized sellers, buying from one keeps the warranty question simple. Keep the order confirmation as proof of purchase.
5. Returns and shipping
- Amazon. Amazon.com says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery if in original or unused condition, with exceptions.[8] Third-party seller policies can differ.
- AliExpress. Its Free Return terms apply only to products with the Free Return label and allow a return within 15 calendar days of receipt, subject to conditions.[9] The terms we read are from 2022 and partly regional, so check the current terms for the US or Canada before you order.
- Shipping limits. Some items don't ship everywhere: Aquarium Co-Op says its battery-backup air pump is not available for shipping to Hawaii or Alaska.[10]
The checklist
- "Ships from" and "Sold by" show Amazon.com, the brand, or a seller the maker names.
- The listing's item number matches the maker's 120 V / 60 Hz variant.
- A UL, ETL or CSA mark will be on the unit (ask for a label photo if unsure).
- The maker's warranty covers this seller.
- You know the return window and who pays for return shipping.
- The item ships to your state or province.

Questions
How do I know an Amazon seller is genuine?
Check 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' on the offer. Amazon.com or the brand itself is the safest; some makers, such as hygger, publish a list of their authorized Amazon stores.[3]
Is there an official AliExpress store for aquarium brands?
We found none confirmed by the makers we checked, including EHEIM, Tetra, Aquarium Co-Op, NICREW, hygger and Fluval. Treat an 'Official Store' name on AliExpress as the store's own claim.
Does a brand not listing Amazon mean Amazon units are fake?
No. Aqueon, Seachem and Fluval point buyers to retailers rather than Amazon, but that only means they don't list Amazon, not that Amazon offers are counterfeit.[4][5][6]
Will the warranty cover a marketplace purchase?
It depends on the maker. NICREW's 12-month warranty requires proof of purchase from an official or authorized channel, and it names Amazon as its only official online channel.[2]
How long do I have to return an item on Amazon?
Amazon.com says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery in original or unused condition, with exceptions; third-party sellers' policies can differ.[8]
Can AliExpress items be returned?
Only items with AliExpress's Free Return label are covered by its Free Return terms, which allow 15 calendar days from receipt under conditions. The terms we read date from 2022, so check the current terms for your country.[9]
